Volunteer Spotlight: Cheryl

Cheryl’s Journey at Anchor Lancaster: A Story of Connection and Compassion

Cheryl’s time at Anchor Lancaster has been defined by genuine connections and a deep sense of purpose. This month, she is celebrating seven years of making a difference as a volunteer with us!

When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering, Cheryl explains, “The need here is so great, and it fills my heart to converse with the guests and help meet a need. They are always so grateful for a warm meal, and that gratitude is what makes everything so meaningful. They are a wonderful group of people, and they’re always so appreciative.”

Cheryl has a clear understanding of the impact Anchor Lancaster has on the community. “We serve anyone and everyone—no questions asked. We’re open five days a week, even on holidays. Everyone who comes here is just like us. They may have had different circumstances, but in many ways, we’re all the same,” she says.

Cheryl knows that even small gestures can have a lasting impact. Something as simple as calling someone by their name can make a world of difference. “I’ve gotten to know many of the guests, and when I use their names to say hello, their faces light up because they are known. It’s a simple thing, but it really matters.”

Cheryl recalls one meaningful moment during her time at Anchor. “One guest had a beaded necklace on, and I mentioned how beautiful it was. A week or two later, he brought one for me, and every time he sees me wearing it, he’s so proud. It’s those small acts of kindness that really stay with you.”

For Cheryl, volunteering isn’t just about providing a meal—it’s about connecting with people and making them feel seen. That genuine kindness goes a long way. Over the past seven years, Cheryl has been part of a team of volunteers that values empathy, connection, and making a difference in the lives of others. We’re grateful for Cheryl’s dedication, and the heart she has for helping others.
